Les émaux de Canton sont des émaux peints sur métal. Le paysage de cette assiette, dans une palette "famille rose", est inspiré de la peinture sur papier ou sur soie des lettrés chinois, et proche également des représentations sur les porcelaines chinoises du règne de Qianlong.

Sans doute réalisé durant le règne de l'empereur Qianlong (1735 – 1796), ce brûle-encens est une pièce exceptionnelle dans les collections occidentales, du point de vue de sa forme, de ses dimensions, et de la qualité des émaux cloisonnées, dont le décors symbolique véhicule des voeux de bon augure.

Vigée Le Brun, illustre portraitiste du XVIIIème siècle, réalise un portrait de sa fille Julie, tout empreint de tendresse maternelle et d'élégance. La jeune fille âgée de dix-sept ans est vêtue d'une longue tunique plissée à la taille, à la mode antique.

La Boucle de cheveux enlevée est un poème héroïco-comique d'Alexander Pope paru en 1711.


Inspirée de cette œuvre à succès, la toile de Leslie fut considérée au 19ème siècle comme un "chef-d'œuvre absolu" par John Ruskin.

Ce portrait est l'une des rares œuvres de jeunesse du peintre Hyacinthe Rigaud, célèbre portraitiste français du XVIIème siècle. Celui qui deviendra portraitiste du Roi-Soleil, manifeste déjà ici un talent extraordinaire dans le rendu des carnations et de l'expression de son modèle.
