Objectifs

At the end of the session, the participants will be capable of understanding :

- the neurobiological foundations/basics of the language and memory
- how the brain manages more than one language, including evidence from both bilinguals and multilinguals

Through the use of evidence from cognitive and neuroscientific research, the session will also aim to:

- Place the research findings within the Swiss linguistic context.
- Describe the role of memory in the learning process, including working memory and declarative memory.
- Identify the mental changes associated with better achievement in learning, particularly as vocabulary acquisition is concerned.
- Objectives linked to the PER - Cross-Curricular Competencies ? Learning Strategies ? General Aim: "The ability to develop strategies refers to the ability to analyze, manage, and improve one?s learning processes (...)"

Contenu

Synopsis:
In this session, we will begin with an introduction to the Neurobiology of language, going beyond native language learning and use. We will discuss how the brain accommodates more than one language, not only in bilingualism, but also focusing on studies of tri-, quadri- and other multilingual speakers, presenting findings that are more relevant to the Swiss linguistic context. We will focus in particular on memory (working, declarative), its role in language learning and the brain changes associated with better language outcomes, especially in vocabulary learning.
