Public visé
This module is designed for secondary II English teachers who are interested in teaching a graphic novel as a literary text.
Objectifs
- Identify and articulate the pedagogical benefits of using graphic novels to teach English and English-language literature
- Support students in developing comprehension skills through the combined use of images and text, using visual cues to aid understanding and meaning-making.
- Foster students' oral and written language production by engaging them in activities that describe, compare, and analyze images, texts, and the meaning generated through their interaction
- Apply practical classroom strategies for teaching graphic novels, including introducing comic-specific vocabulary and guiding students in interpreting the relationship between written text and visual elements
- Develop students' close-reading and analytical skills by focusing on narratological elements specific to graphic novels
- Design tasks and creative projects appropriate to graphic novels, and adapt evaluation methods for both oral and written forms of assessment
Contenu
The first half-day will focus on acquiring the groundwork for teaching graphic novels and is divided into three parts. We will begin with an introduction to the medium, including comic and graphic novel terminology, as well as a discussion of the pedagogical advantages of using graphic novels with ESL learners. We will then turn to practical classroom approaches, exploring strategies to help students learn and apply this terminology and to guide them in moving from visual cues and comprehension to oral and written expression. The final part of the session will compare close-reading practices and analytical approaches used for prose with those specific to graphic novels. Each segment of the session will include concrete examples drawn from primary sources suitable for students at the post-obligatoire level.
The second half-day will focus on student assessment. We will examine the types of requirements that can be assigned and discuss how evaluation criteria may be adapted for oral and written examinations, considering what recent research regarding evaluation suggests, as well as the future maturity reform. The session will also involve the development and sharing of classroom activities and creative projects that can be implemented with students.
