Public visé

This module is designed for secondary II English teachers who are interested in using film as a primary source with students and/or as an in-class support requiring active participation from students.

Objectifs

- Propose challenging and stimulating approaches to using film adaptations of literary works taught in class.
- Explore the pedagogical advantages of using film as a literary text with ESL learners, including activities which encourage the development of students' listening and speaking skills.
- Develop practical tools for teaching film, drawing explicit connections between the interpretation of prose versus film in order to strengthen analytical skills across both media.
- Design tasks and creative projects suited to filmic texts which align with the digital and multimedia criteria of the maturity reform, and adapt evaluation methods for both oral and written forms of assessment.

Contenu

This module consists of two half-days and is designed to provide teachers with practical, classroom-ready strategies for working with film and literature. During the first half-day, we will begin by looking at film analysis and film terminology, alongside adaptable resources that participants can use with their students. We will then explore multiple ways of integrating film with or as literary texts, supported by concrete teaching approaches for each case:
1. using film as a companion to a literary work, viewed alongside the reading to support comprehension and to analyze differences in modes of representation;
2. using film as an extension of a literary text and as part of the preparation for a long-term project; and
3. treating film as a literary text in its own right, serving as a primary source for written or oral assessment.

The second half-day will address classroom activities and tasks, long-term creative projects, and the assessment requirements and evaluation criteria specific to working with filmic texts. We will also discuss the evaluative process in relation to film, drawing on recent research on assessment and considering the forthcoming maturity reform.
